A haircut in the USA typically costs between $15 and $75, with men’s cuts commonly $25 to $50, women’s cuts $45 to $75, and children’s $15 to $30. The spread is enormous once you look at individual markets — published state figures run from around $25 in Wyoming to $60 to $160 in New York.
This guide covers what each service costs, what colour and styling add on top, how tipping works, why the same cut costs three times as much twenty miles away, and where the money you hand over actually goes — which turns out to explain most of the pricing.

The men’s and women’s gap is less about the haircut than about what the appointment includes. A women’s cut commonly bundles shampoo, cut, blow-dry and style, while a men’s dry cut is exactly that. Comparing the two prices without comparing the two services produces a misleading conclusion.
Time is the honest unit here. A 20-minute clipper cut and a 50-minute cut, wash and finish are not the same purchase.
Where You Live Changes Everything
Location is the single biggest variable, and the gap is wider than most people assume.

It varies within states too. A high-end salon in New York City may charge over $100 while a rural town in the same state charges around $45 — so a national average is a weak guide to what you should expect to pay on your own street.
Where Your Money Actually Goes
This is the part that explains the pricing, and it is rarely mentioned in price guides.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80 percent of barbers and 48 percent of hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists are self-employed. In practice that usually means booth rent: the stylist pays the salon owner a weekly or monthly fee for their chair, buys their own tools and often their own product, and keeps what is left after that.
The BLS also reports median hourly wages as of May 2025 of $18.37 for barbers and $17.21 for hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists — $35,880 a year for the occupation overall.
Two things follow. The price on the board is not the stylist’s income — rent, product, insurance and equipment come out first. And that is also why tipping in this trade is not a nicety in the way it might be elsewhere.
Everyone cutting your hair is licensed
The BLS confirms that all states require barbers, hairstylists and cosmetologists to be licensed — a state-approved program plus a written and practical exam, with health and safety training required in some states. That training and licensing cost is part of what sits behind the price.

Colour ranges are wide because the work is not standardised. Balayage on short hair and balayage on long, previously coloured hair are different jobs in both time and product, and many salons price colour by the hour or by the amount of product used rather than by a flat menu price.
Ask two questions before any colour appointment: is the cut included in that price or separate, and will a toner or gloss be added at the end and charged extra? Those two answers account for most colour bills that come in higher than expected.
What Drives the Price Within One Town
- Stylist level. Most salons price by column — a senior stylist or master barber charges more than someone newly qualified, in the same chair-lined room.
- What is included. Shampoo, blow-dry, finishing product and a hot towel all cost time.
- Hair length and density. Many salons add a long-hair or thick-hair surcharge, and it is fair rather than a trick — it takes longer.
- Specialism. Curly-hair specialists, textured-hair expertise and precision barbering are trained skills that price accordingly.
- Rent. A high-street location with real footfall costs the salon more, and that reaches the board.
- Appointment versus walk-in. Chain and walk-in shops trade lower prices for less time per client.
- Day and time. Some salons price weekends and evenings differently.
Tipping
The standard is 15 to 20 percent, and published guidance ranges from 10 to 25 percent depending on the service and how pleased you are.
A few points worth knowing. Tip on the pre-discount total if you used an offer. If different people washed, cut and styled your hair, ask how tips are shared — in many salons the assistant who shampooed you is tipped separately. And if your stylist owns the salon, tipping is still normal in the USA even though the older etiquette said otherwise.
Budget for the tip as part of the appointment rather than as an afterthought. On a $160 colour, 20 percent is $32 — not a rounding error.
How to Spend Less Without a Worse Haircut
- Book with a junior or apprentice stylist. Supervised work at a lower column price, and often more time on you rather than less.
- Skip the blow-dry. Many salons deduct it if you are happy to leave with wet hair.
- Stretch the interval with a cut that grows out well. Tell your stylist you want eight weeks rather than six and let them cut accordingly — this saves more over a year than any discount.
- Choose colour that needs less maintenance. Balayage and lived-in colour are designed to grow out softly; a solid root touch-up demands regular appointments.
- Ask about training nights. Many salons offer heavily discounted cuts on supervised training evenings.
- Book off-peak where the salon prices weekdays differently.
The saving not worth making is switching to a cheaper stylist for a cut you have to have corrected. A bad colour correction costs several times the money you saved, and hair takes months to recover.
