The Fairbanks Parks and Recreation department is responsible for maintaining parks and recreational facilities in Fairbanks, Alaska. Its Pioneer Park division is responsible for managing Pioneer Park and the Birch Hill Recreation Area. The Pioneer Park is a 44-acre historic theme park consisting of recreational and educational opportunities. The primary function of the park is to preserve the historical and recreational atmosphere of the park for community members, visitors, merchants and resident users. It also manages more than 30 concession and resident user contracts and acts as a coordinator for community-based special events. The Birch Hill area is a Nordic skiing complex comprised of a modern ski center and more than 30 kilometers of groomed trails. The aquatic division is responsible for the operation and programming of activities at three facilities. Its staff comprises program managers, facility supervisors, and full- and part-time lifeguards.
