St. Elmo Steak House has been a landmark in downtown Indianapolis since 1902. It is one of the oldest steakhouses in its original location. Founded by Joe Stahr, the restaurant was named after the patron saint of sailors. Through much of its history, the restaurant was considered a dining bastion for men, a place where salesmen and tycoons come to complete business deals and where celebrities came to relax. With the arrival of nearby Circle Centre Mall in 1996, St. Elmo found itself enmeshed in a dining phase of trendy new restaurants. The restaurant was given a multimillion-dollar makeover, providing a more comfortable environment without undercutting its turn-of-the-century roots. St. Elmo Steak House s menu items include New York strip, filet mignon, porterhouse steak, rib eye, prime rib, pork chops, lamb racks, veal chops, chicken breasts, lobster, crab, fish, salads and a variety of side dishes.
