People remember how a room felt, not how many plastic skeletons were in it, and the hosts who enjoy their own parties are the ones who prepared food that needs no attention after the first guest arrives.

What follows is thirty-four specific ideas across decorations, lighting, food and games, plus a full supply list you can work through. At the end are four safety points that matter more at Halloween than at any other party: decorative contact lenses, which legally require a prescription; costume labels; candles in carved pumpkins; and dry ice, which is the single most commonly mishandled party item there is.

       What’s in this guide

Five decisions that do most of the work

Spend the budget on lighting, not on props

Decoration ideas that look expensive and are not
Lighting, which is the actual job
Food and drink that works for a crowd
Games and activities, by who is in the room
The supply list
Four Halloween safety points worth knowing

Decorative contact lenses legally require a prescription

Costumes: read the label and check the length

Candles and carved pumpkins

Dry ice is not a decoration

Put the four safety items on the shopping list, not the to-do list

A timeline for the week before

A week out

Two days out

The day before

On the day

Frequently asked questions
The short version

Sources

Five decisions that do most of the work

Make these five calls first and everything else follows. The CDC is unambiguous: all contact lenses are regulated medical devices that require a prescription and proper fitting by a doctor. That includes plano lenses with no corrective power, bought purely to change eye colour.

The risks CDC lists are not minor irritations. Ill-fitting or improperly used lenses can leave the eye more vulnerable to scratches on the outer layer or ulcers on the cornea, with potential for scarring, infection and blindness. CDC’s advice is to avoid purchasing these lenses from unauthorized sources like costume shops or drug stores, and to obtain them only from licensed outlets such as eye doctors’ offices or reputable online vendors with a valid prescription.

The selling side is regulated too. The Federal Trade Commission states that it is illegal to sell contact lenses — even cosmetic contacts — to consumers without a prescription, and that retailers may only sell contacts, including cosmetic contacts, when provided with a valid prescription or after verifying the prescription information with the prescriber. The FTC notes that violations of its Contact Lens Rule may result in legal action, including civil penalties of up to $42,530 per violation. So a seller offering them with no prescription step is not offering a convenience; they are breaking a rule that exists because of what the CDC describes above.

Costumes: read the label and check the length

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Halloween guidance is short and practical. On materials, it advises looking for the label Flame Resistant when buying costumes, masks, beards and wigs. On fit, it says costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling — the most common Halloween injury is not anything dramatic, it is a fall.

On masks, CPSC says that if a mask is used, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision. And for anyone walking between houses or walking home from your party, it advises decorating or trimming costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. A roll of reflective tape by the door is a sensible thing for a host to own.

Candles and carved pumpkins

CPSC’s guidance names the specific place this goes wrong: candlelit jack-o’-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. That is exactly where most people put them, and a costume walking past at knee height is the hazard.

The simple fix for a party is to use battery tealights in every pumpkin and every lantern near a doorway or walkway, and keep real flames to surfaces well above knee height, away from the route people take in and out. You lose almost nothing visually — a flickering LED inside a thick pumpkin wall is hard to tell from a candle at three paces.

Dry ice is not a decoration

Fog in a punch bowl is the most popular Halloween party effect and the one with the most serious handling rules. OSHA’s guidance on dry ice is blunt on three points.

On skin: never handle dry ice with bare hands, and avoid eye or skin contact. Proper cryogenic gloves exist for exactly this. On air: do not use or store dry ice in confined areas, walk-in refrigerators, environmental chambers or rooms without ventilation, since a leak in such an area could cause an oxygen-deficient atmosphere. A small room full of people with dry ice subliming all evening is the scenario that rule describes. And on containers: never store a cryogen in a sealed, airtight container at a temperature above its boiling point, because the pressure may lead to an explosion. A screw-top cooler, a sealed flask or a lidded jar is the wrong vessel.

If you still want fog, the safer version is to keep the dry ice in a separate bowl of warm water as a visual effect rather than in anything people are drinking from, use thick gloves and tongs to move it, ventilate the room, store the rest in a container that can vent, and keep the whole arrangement where children cannot reach it.

Item

The rule

Source

Decorative contact lenses

Regulated medical devices requiring a prescription and proper fitting by a doctor

CDC

Selling cosmetic lenses

Illegal to sell any contact lens, including cosmetic, without a prescription

FTC

Costumes, masks, beards, wigs

Look for the label Flame Resistant; keep costumes short enough to prevent tripping

CPSC

Masks

Must fit securely with eyeholes large enough for full vision

CPSC

Candlelit jack-o’-lanterns

Keep away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush the flame

CPSC

Dry ice

Never handle with bare hands; never use in rooms without ventilation; never seal in an airtight container

OSHA

Put the four safety items on the shopping list, not the to-do list

Battery tealights, a roll of reflective tape, thick gloves and tongs if dry ice is involved, and a working light over the path to your door.
