A basket built on a simple formula costs about the same, gets played with for weeks rather than eaten in an afternoon, and takes no longer to put together once you know what goes in it.

Below are thirty-two ideas organised by age, from toddlers through to the adults everyone forgets to include. After them are three things worth knowing before Easter morning, each from a federal source: what the USDA says about eating eggs you have hidden, what the CDC says about giving a live chick to a small child, and what the CPSC’s post-Reese’s-Law standard requires of the cheap light-up toys that end up in baskets.

       What’s in this guide

The four-part basket formula

Easter falls outdoors, so buy for outdoors

Easter basket ideas for toddlers and preschoolers
Easter basket ideas for school-age children
Easter basket ideas for teenagers
Easter gifts and basket ideas for adults
Three Easter facts worth knowing before the morning

The eggs you hide are not the eggs you eat

A live chick or duckling is not a gift for a small child

The cheap light-up basket toy and the button battery

Count the eggs out and count them back in

What belongs in the basket, by age
Frequently asked questions
The short version

Sources

The four-part basket formula

A basket that holds up past breakfast has four things in it, and only one of them is chocolate. All three have clear federal guidance behind them.

The eggs you hide are not the eggs you eat

This is the one that surprises people. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service states that it does not recommend eating hard cooked eggs after hiding or playing with them, because bacteria picked up on the shells can be transferred to the edible part of the egg. The practical answer is to run two sets: decorated eggs for hiding and handling, and a separate batch kept in the fridge for eating.

FSIS also gives the storage rule for the batch you do eat: hard-cooked eggs should be refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking and used within a week. On cracking, the news is better than most people assume — if eggs crack during hard cooking, they are safe, though all eggs should be thoroughly cooked. And for anything baked with eggs in it, FSIS says to cook casseroles and other dishes containing eggs to a safe minimum internal temperature of 160 °F, using a food thermometer to be sure.

Egg question

What the USDA says

Can we eat the eggs we hid?

FSIS does not recommend eating hard cooked eggs after hiding or playing with them

How long do hard-cooked eggs keep?

Refrigerate within 2 hours of cooking and use within a week

One cracked while boiling

Eggs that crack during hard cooking are safe; all eggs should be thoroughly cooked

Egg bake or quiche for Easter lunch

Cook dishes containing eggs to a safe minimum internal temperature of 160 °F

Plastic eggs for a hunt

No food safety clock at all, which is why they are the better choice for hiding

A live chick or duckling is not a gift for a small child

Easter is the one week of the year when live chicks and ducklings are sold as presents, and the CDC’s guidance on backyard poultry is unambiguous about who should not be handling them. It advises not letting children younger than 5 years old handle or touch chicks, ducklings or other poultry, and states that live poultry should not be kept in schools, childcare centers and other facilities with children younger than 5 years old.

The reason is Salmonella. The CDC notes that outbreaks of Salmonella linked to backyard poultry are common, that eggshells can become contaminated from poultry droppings, and that children are more likely to get sick from germs commonly associated with poultry such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli. Its advice on handling is specific: do not kiss backyard poultry or snuggle them and then touch your face or mouth.

None of that makes keeping poultry a bad idea for a family that wants to. It makes an impulse-bought chick a poor Easter gift for a household with a toddler in it — and the same consideration applies if the child is in a nursery setting, which is covered in our guide to choosing a daycare or childcare provider.

The cheap light-up basket toy and the button battery

Easter baskets are filled with small, inexpensive novelty items, and a lot of those now light up or make a noise, which means a button or coin cell battery sitting behind a cover. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is blunt about the consequence: when button cell and coin batteries are swallowed, the ingested batteries can cause serious injuries, internal chemical burns and death. CPSC has reported 27 deaths and 54,300 emergency-room-treated injuries associated with ingested or inserted button cell or coin batteries over the period from 2011 to 2021.

There is now a mandatory federal standard, brought in under Reese’s Law, and it gives you a concrete thing to check in the shop. It requires that opening the battery compartment take either the use of a tool such as a screwdriver or coin, or the application of at least two independent and simultaneous movements to open by hand. Products must also pass a series of performance tests simulating reasonably foreseeable use or misuse, and there are labelling requirements both for the product itself and for its packaging.

So the test is simple: try to open the battery door with a thumbnail. If it slides or pops off without a tool or two deliberate movements, put it back — and if it is a bulk novelty pack from an unfamiliar seller, that is exactly the category where the standard is most often not met.

Count the eggs out and count them back in

Write down how many eggs you hid before the hunt starts, and do not finish until that number has been found. An egg missed behind a planter is a smell nobody can locate for a fortnight, and a plastic egg with food inside is worse. Counting also stops the hunt ending with one child holding everything, which is the other reliable Easter morning problem.

What belongs in the basket, by age

A quick cross-check before you buy, with the thing most often got wrong at each age.

Age

What works

What to leave out

Under 3

Large, washable, unbreakable; bath and sandpit toys; board books

Small parts, loose plastic grass, anything with a button battery

3 to 5

Chalk, bubbles, seeds, stacking and pouring toys, a sun hat

Craft kits needing adult supervision; eggs small enough to swallow

6 to 11

Kites, bug jars, balls, card games, a series opener, a water bottle

Anything that needs a screen or an oven

12 and up

Sunglasses, socks, SPF, a gift card, cash in an egg, one good bar

Novelty items and anything recognisably from a child’s aisle

Adults

Seeds and bulbs, gardening gloves, good chocolate, a picnic blanket

A basket imitating a child’s basket

For the rest of the year’s gift lists, see our guides to Thanksgiving host gifts, the 50 best Christmas gifts for everyone on your list and Christmas gifts under $25, $50 and $100.
