That reality should decide the gift. Flowers that need trimming and a vase, a bottle that needs chilling, or a dish that needs oven time are all small favours asked of someone who has nothing left to give.

Below are twenty-five host gifts sorted by when they get used — on arrival, during the meal, after everyone leaves, and in the weeks that follow. At the end is the section worth reading if your gift is food you made yourself: the temperature and timing rules the USDA publishes, and the allergen labelling standard the FDA now applies to nine ingredients rather than eight.

       What’s in this guide

Gifts that ask nothing of the host on arrival
Gifts for the host's kitchen

Ask one question before you decide

Gifts that work once the plates are cleared
Gifts that arrive after Thanksgiving is over
If your gift is food you cooked, the rules are part of the gift

The danger zone, and the two-hour clock

The two numbers to hold a dish at

Label the allergens — there are nine now, not eight

Bring your dish in something you can leave behind

What to spend, and on whom
Frequently asked questions
The short version

Sources

Gifts that ask nothing of the host on arrival

The test for this group is whether the host can accept it with one hand and put it down without thinking. The federal guidance here is short, specific and almost never followed.

The danger zone, and the two-hour clock

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service puts it plainly: bacteria grow rapidly between 40 and 140 °F. Its instruction for perishable food is to discard all perishable foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, and casseroles left at room temperature longer than 2 hours — one hour in temperatures above 90 °F.

That two hours is cumulative. It includes the time your dish spent on your own counter while you found the lid, the drive over, and the wait on the host’s worktop. By the time it is served, a casserole that left your kitchen at one o’clock may already have used its clock up.

The two numbers to hold a dish at

FSIS gives the holding temperatures either side of that range: to keep hot foods safe, keep them at 140 °F or above, and cold foods must be kept at 40 °F or below. For a dish travelling in a car, that means either an insulated carrier that is genuinely hot when it goes in, or a cooler packed with ice or frozen gel packs — not a tea towel over a dish on the passenger seat.

If you are bringing poultry in any form, FSIS is specific about doneness: cook all poultry to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F. This is also why a thermometer is the single best kitchen gift on this page — it is the only way to know rather than guess.

Dish type

How to transport it

What the guidance says

Hot casserole, stuffing, roasted vegetables

Insulated carrier, straight from the oven, lid on

Keep hot foods at 140 °F or above

Salads, dips, cream desserts, anything dairy

Cooler with ice or frozen gel packs

Cold foods must be kept at 40 °F or below

Poultry in any form

Cooked through before it leaves, then held hot

Cook all poultry to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F

Anything perishable on a counter

Serve it or refrigerate it

Discard after more than 2 hours at room temperature; 1 hour above 90 °F

Leftovers you are leaving behind

Shallow containers, into the fridge

Refrigerate within 2 hours in shallow containers for quick cooling

Label the allergens — there are nine now, not eight

A Thanksgiving table usually has at least one person avoiding something, and a dish brought by a guest arrives with no label at all. The Food and Drug Administration identifies nine major food allergens by law: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

Sesame is the newest of the nine. It was added by the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act, signed into law on 23 April 2021, with the change taking effect on 1 January 2023. That is recent enough that plenty of home cooks still work from a mental list of eight — which matters for tahini in a dressing, sesame in a seeded crust, or a spice blend nobody read the back of.

The fix takes one index card. Write the dish name and every one of the nine that appears in it, prop it against the dish, and the host never has to answer a question they cannot answer.

Bring your dish in something you can leave behind

A dish that arrives in your own good casserole creates an obligation: the host now has to wash it, store it and get it back to you. Bring food in a disposable foil tray or an inexpensive dish you are happy to abandon, and say so clearly when you hand it over. It converts a gift with strings attached into one without.

What to spend, and on whom

Host gifts are not reciprocal gifts, so the number is lower than people fear and the thought matters more than the amount.

Who is hosting

What usually fits

A close friend or sibling

One good thing, or a service for the day after

A parent or in-law

Something for the kitchen they will use next year, plus help clearing up

A colleague or newer friend

A consumable that needs nothing from them on arrival

Someone hosting for the first time

Practical kit: thermometer, sheet pans, oven mitts, towels

Someone hosting a large crowd

Containers, foil, bags, ice — the invisible infrastructure

If the host has brought in outside help for the meal, our guides to choosing a catering company and what catering costs for a party cover how that side works.
