You already know roughly what you can spend on each person; what you usually do not know is what that number actually buys in a given category, or which of the cheap options will still be in use next December.

This guide sorts forty-five real gift ideas into three tiers — under $25, under $50 and under $100 — and says plainly what each tier can and cannot stretch to. It also covers three federal rules that decide whether you get your money back when something goes wrong: the shipping deadline online sellers are held to, the three-day cancellation right and the large hole in it, and what to look at on a gift card before it goes into your basket.

       What’s in this guide

What each budget actually buys

One good thing beats three adequate ones

Best Christmas gifts under $25

Making a $25 gift look like a $75 one

Best Christmas gifts under $50
Best Christmas gifts under $100
Three shopping rules that decide whether you get your money back

Online orders come with a shipping deadline

The three-day cancellation right has a hole in it shaped like a Christmas market

Look at the gift card before it goes in your basket

Pay by card, not by transfer, for anything bought from a seller you do not know

When to spend up a tier, and when not to

Spend up when the cheap version fails in a way that matters

Spend up when you are replacing something they use daily

Do not spend up to buy the entry model of a premium category

Frequently asked questions
The short version

Sources

What each budget actually buys

The jump from $25 to $50 buys durability. The jump from $50 to $100 buys either a tool that will outlive you or an experience the recipient could not justify buying themselves. Knowing which jump you are making stops you from spending $90 on a slightly nicer version of a $30 thing.

Tier

What it reliably buys

Where it runs out

Under $25

One excellent consumable, one well-made small object, or a secondhand book

Anything electronic, anything with a motor, anything leather

Under $50

Cookware and hand tools that last decades, board games, mid-range textiles

Audio, wearables, anything branded in a fashion category

Under $100

Entry-level electronics, real wool and leather, a serious kitchen item, a booked experience

Flagship phones, laptops, premium headphones, multi-day trips

One good thing beats three adequate ones

If your budget for someone is $75, a single $75 gift almost always lands better than three $25 gifts. Three small items read as a shopping trip; one considered item reads as a decision. The exception is children, who genuinely do prefer volume, and people you barely know, where one small thing is the correct social signal.

Best Christmas gifts under $25

This tier lives or dies on quality within a narrow category. A single item in a rigid box with tissue paper and a handwritten card reads as considered. The same item in a plastic shop bag reads as an afterthought. Each of those comes with a different set of rights, and they are not the ones most people assume.

Online orders come with a shipping deadline

Under the Federal Trade Commission’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, sellers have to ship your order within the time they or their advertisements say — and if they do not give a time, they must ship within 30 days of when you placed your order. If there is a delay, the FTC says the seller has to tell you and give you the choice of either agreeing to the delay or cancelling your order for a full refund. And if the seller does not ship at all, the FTC is explicit that it has to give you a full refund, not just a gift card or store credit.

That last clause is the one worth remembering in December, because store credit is exactly what an under-pressure retailer will offer you first.

The three-day cancellation right has a hole in it shaped like a Christmas market

The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule gives you a right to cancel for a full refund that lasts until midnight of the third business day after the sale. It applies to sales at your home, workplace or dormitory of $25 or more, and to sales at temporary locations such as hotels, convention centres, fairgrounds and restaurants of $130 or more.

What it does not cover is most of what you will actually do this month. The FTC lists sales made entirely online, by mail or by telephone as excluded, along with sales made after completing negotiations at the seller’s permanent place of business — and, specifically, arts or crafts sold at fairs, malls, civic centres or schools. In other words, the handmade ceramics you buy at a holiday craft fair carry no three-day cancellation right at all. Ask the stallholder what their own returns policy is before you hand over the money, because federal law is not going to help you there.

Where you bought it

Three-day cancellation right?

Doorstep or workplace sale, $25 or more

Yes

Hotel, convention centre or fairground sale, $130 or more

Yes

Online, by mail or by phone

No — but the shipping rule above applies

A shop’s permanent premises

No — the retailer’s own policy is all you have

Arts or crafts at a fair, mall, civic centre or school

No — explicitly excluded

Look at the gift card before it goes in your basket

Cards hanging on an open rack are tampered with by thieves who record the numbers and wait for someone to load them. The FTC’s advice is direct: check for signs of tampering, and if it looks like someone scratched off the back of a gift card or removed any stickers, tell a cashier or manager. The FTC also advises keeping copies of the gift card and the store receipt, because if the card does not work or has no money on it, the number on the card and the store receipt are what let you report it.

The fee and expiry rules that apply once the card is loaded are covered in our main Christmas gift guide.

Pay by card, not by transfer, for anything bought from a seller you do not know

An unfamiliar online shop with unusually low prices is the classic December trap. Paying by card leaves you a dispute route; paying by bank transfer, cryptocurrency or a gift card number leaves you nothing. If a seller will only accept one of those three, that preference is the information you needed.

When to spend up a tier, and when not to

Three situations justify moving from the $50 tier to the $100 tier, and one common situation does not.

Spend up when the cheap version fails in a way that matters

Umbrellas, knives, luggage, waterproofs and anything load-bearing. A cheap version of these does not simply work less well — it fails at the moment it is needed, which is worse than not having it.

Spend up when you are replacing something they use daily

A pillow, a desk chair cushion, a kettle, a phone charger that lives by the bed. Cost per use is so low on these that the higher tier pays for itself inside a season.

Do not spend up to buy the entry model of a premium category

A $95 version of something that is really a $300 product is usually the worst purchase on any list.
