A brilliant dentist forty minutes away who only opens while you are at work is a dentist you will stop seeing. A practice willing to say &#8220;we would send you to a specialist for that&#8221; is one that knows the edge of its own competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Safety Questions Almost Nobody Asks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infection control in dental settings is regulated and routine, and the overwhelming majority of practices handle it properly. But the CDC&#8217;s own summary of infection prevention in dental settings names the specific lapses that have actually led to disease transmission \u2014 and two of them are things a patient can simply ask about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The documented breaches include unsafe injection practices, failure to heat sterilise dental handpieces between patients, and failure to monitor autoclaves through spore testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-info-box uagb-block-dtqib100\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-content\"><div class=\"uagb-ifb-title-wrap\"><h3 class=\"uagb-ifb-title\">Two questions, asked politely, that tell you a great deal<\/h3><\/div><p class=\"uagb-ifb-desc\">&#8220;Are handpieces heat sterilised between patients?&#8221; and &#8220;Do you spore test your autoclave?&#8221; A well-run practice answers both immediately and often with some pride, because these are the things they train on. That is a higher bar than &#8220;competent&#8221;, and it is worth holding out for on a relationship you may keep for a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a Good Treatment Plan Is Presented<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where a practice reveals most about itself, particularly when the recommendation is expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should be shown the evidence \u2014 the X-ray, the photograph, the specific tooth \u2014 rather than told a conclusion. You should be given <strong>options<\/strong> where options exist, with the trade-offs of each explained, including the option of monitoring something rather than treating it now. And you should get it in writing, itemised, with the costs attached, before anything begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should not happen is pressure to decide today, a plan that jumps straight to the most expensive intervention without explaining why the cheaper one will not work, or a large amount of cosmetic work proposed at a visit you attended for a specific complaint.
